Classroom Rules for 1st Graders

First grade is an exciting time of exploration and learning for young children. Class size and structure vary by school but many of the core rules regarding respect, cooperation and responsibility remain the same. Since 6-year-old children can't remember dozens of rules, many first grade teachers consolidate the essential guidelines into a few behavior and safety requirements.
  1. Don't Run

    • The "no running" rule helps maintain order and safety in the classroom. Larger classes can have as many as 30 students in a small space. Having young children erratically running through the classroom is disruptive and potentially dangerous, should someone knock into another student or desk.

    Be Kind

    • The "golden rule" relates to all aspects of social interactions such as being kind, taking turns and not interrupting others when speaking. Students develop empathy by considering how they would like to be treated and then applying that treatment to others.

    Respect Class Space

    • Students must learn personal responsibility and care for the common space in the classroom. Children are expected to clean up their toys or projects in a timely fashion without complaint. Some classrooms have chore wheels that designate each student a job every day, such as feeding the fish or watering the plants.

    Don't Disrupt Others

    • Respecting the workspace and habits of other students is an important lesson in first grade. Students must speak quietly during work time and raise their hands during group lessons. They should not distract or talk to students who are listening to the teacher or trying to work.

Keep Hands and Feet to Yourself

    • Students must learn to discuss and disagree without using physical force. Even playful fighting that begins in fun, like shoving or pushing, can quickly escalate to a hurtful physical altercation.

    Listen

    • Following directions and listening to the teacher are necessary skills throughout a child's educational experience. Many teachers also teach students that good listening skills include paying attention and following directions.
