White Board Activities for Third Grade

White boards are a wonderful tool for third-grade classrooms, as they provide a reusable resource for all students. Students enjoy being able to use a medium that they are able to erase and use again. White boards are a convenient way to practice and review many subjects and give teachers a quick way to informally assess the group's progress.
  1. Spelling Test Practice

    • Practice spelling words using white boards. Give one of the words from the students' spelling list aloud. Students should write the word on their board. Next, have them show the word they have spelled. Check for accuracy. Continue until the entire list has been practiced. Alternatively, the teacher can hold up her own white board with the correct spelling and students can self-check their words.

    Multiplication Jeopardy

    • For third-graders learning multiplication facts, a Jeopardy-style game can add a new twist to studying the facts. Give students an answer to a multiplication problem and then have them write the equation on their board. For example, if you give the number 20, students may write 4 x 5 or 2 x 10 on their board. This activity helps students to start thinking about what elements make up a multiplication problem.

    Fraction Practice

    • Show the class a pie chart with a portion of the pie filled in. Have students write the fraction out numerically on their white boards. When they finish, have them hold up the boards. Also, try the opposite strategy. Write a fraction for the students to translate into a pie chart. Third-graders can also work in partners, with one partner writing the fraction and the other drawing the picture.

    Review Games

    • Use white boards to review before tests and quizzes. Split the class into teams of two. Each team has its own white board. Ask the students a question from any subject area. Each team must write their answer on their white board. If the team answers correctly, they receive a point. Keep a tally of the two teams' points, and at the end of the game, whoever has the most points wins.
