Let your students share their plans for the new year with a calendar display. Write the months of the year on 12 sheets of white card stock. Assign each student or group of students a month. Ask the students to draw a picture of what they hope to do during that month. For example, during June, students might draw themselves at the beach. When students have completed their drawings, hang them up in order on the bulletin board.
Let students help you make a Happy New Year banner for your bulletin board. Cut 12 large rectangles from construction paper, one for each letter in the phrase "Happy New Year." Use a hole punch to make a hole in the top of each rectangle. Give one rectangle to each student and assign each student one letter. Provide students with paint, glitter pens and markers to write the letter and decorate the rectangle. Cut a large piece of yarn and string the letters onto the yarn, leaving space in between letters.
Create a fireworks display for your New Year's bulletin board, recommends the website Enchanted Learning. Give each student a piece of black construction paper, glue (do not use glue sticks) and glitter in a variety of bright colors, including gold, silver, red and green. Encourage students to make interesting shapes and designs on their paper using the glue. Show students how to shake glitter over their paper so that it will stick to the glue. Once the glue is dry, shake off the excess glitter. Hang the pictures on a black background to create a fireworks display for your classroom.
Create a bulletin board that highlights your students' resolutions for the coming year. Take a picture of each student before the winter holidays. Cut balloon shapes from construction paper and give one to each student. Ask students to write their New Year's resolution in the balloon and decorate it as they wish. Attach the pictures to the bottom of each balloon and attach to the bulletin board. Attach a string from the bottom of each balloon; connect all strings at the bottom with a ribbon bow. Take part by including your own picture and resolution as well.
