SMART Board Activities for Addie in Charge

"Addie in Charge," written by Laurie Lawlor, is a book featured within the Scott Foresman Reading Series. "Addie in Charge" lessons within the classroom are taught with corresponding SMART Board activities to enhance learning experiences. Classified as historical fiction, the book introduces students to character skills, such as courage and intelligence, and SMART Board activities promote those character traits by introducing students to a variety of vocabulary words, sentence structures and historically accurate information.
  1. Addie Character Notebook

    • Create an "Addie in Charge" SMART Board character notebook. Instruct students to express their ideas about Addie's character traits through written activities. For an added written activity, have students express their ideas about Addie's family members' character traits. Within the notebook, list Addie's character traits through the vocabulary words listed with the book. The vocabulary word list includes bellows, billows, smarted, crouched and tufts. List quotes from various characters within the SMART Notebook for the students to read. Instruct students to determine who said each quote listed.

    Family Times

    • Students enjoy acting out situations and working together. Construct a Family Times activity by reading over the summary and the storyline from "Addie in Charge" as a group. Divide the children into teams to practice the "Act it Out" activity that is found on Resources 2. Review the vocabulary and grammar page together. Enjoy a timed quiz or a vocabulary game, depending upon your personalized choice. Practice writing simple, compound and complex sentences in the interactive SMART Notebooks or on the SMART interactive whiteboard.

    • Hold an "Addie in Charge" vocabulary-focused SMART Board activity. This flashcard activity uses vocabulary words and their definitions from the story, set up in flashcard interactive format. Visit StudyStack.com for for an example activity, using vocabulary word flashcards, such as firebreak, illuminated, charred, tufts, cinders and engulf. Set the activity up for either questions or answers to come first.

    Pioneers

    • Instruct students to explore the Book 4: Unit 1 ThinkQuest activity that corresponds to "Addie in Charge," titled, "Pioneers." This activity is the official Scott Foresman Reading Internet Workshop for "Addie in Charge," which is found at SFR Reading Online. ThinkQuest activities are created by students for students and are construced for SMART Board use. The "Pioneers" activity follows-up with the "Addie in Charge" story by teaching about experiences pioneers had in comparison to the characters in Addie's family.
