What are Smart Board Activities for Fractions?

For some students in grades 3, 4 and 5, fractions may be a source of frustration. The Smart Board may be the solution to fractional meltdowns. The Smart Board is an interactive electronic white board that projects a computer monitor to a large screen for web-based instruction. The touch screen allows students and teachers to click, drag and type on the screen. Mathematics instruction is enhanced through the use of websites geared toward the reinforcement of specific concepts and skills. Students are motivated to learn through active participation. Visual representations help students understand mathematics through concrete models.
  1. Fact Monster: Frenchy's Fraction Cafe

    • The Fact Monster website has various activities to develop an understanding of fractions. The Frenchy's Fraction Cafe consists of tasks using pizzas, progressing in difficulty. Students are first asked to determine the fairness of various pizzas that have been sliced into even and uneven slices. This reinforces the concept that fractions are equal parts of a whole. Another activity displays various fractional parts of a pizza directing students to compare fraction pairs as greater than, less than or equal in value. Adding and subtracting like and unlike fractions are also demonstrated as the skills progress to higher competency levels. This website provides a real-world example of fractions for students.

    Fun Brain: Fresh Baked Fractions

    • The Fun Brain website offers an activity to reinforce fractional equivalence. The Fresh Baked Fraction activity, in the Fun Brain website, displays groups of four fractions. Students are directed to click on the fraction that is not equal to the other three. The difficulty level ranges from easy, to medium, to hard to super brain. Fractional equivalence mastery helps students find common denominators and reduce fractions to simplest form.

    Math Wire: Visualizing Fractions

    • The Math Wire website features activities that help students create and identify fractions. In the visualizing activity, students are directed to create fractions from a given example. Students determine the number of equal parts based on the denominator, and then shade the number of parts based on the numerator. This creates a visual model of a given fraction. In the naming activity, students are given a visual model of a fraction and are directed to identify the fraction based on the number of shaded parts compared to the total number of parts.

    Fraction Flags

    • The Fraction Flags, Halves and Quarters activity directs students to design flags using colors and proportions. From given proportions, students separate flags into equal parts and use colors to shade the flag to represent the fraction. Options include creating flags using halves, using fourths, or using a combination of both. The flag is divided into 24 equal sections. Students find the equivalent fractions with the denominator of 24. This activity reinforces fractional equivalence.
