Good Reasons to Move Kids to a New Class

Moving your child to a different classroom in the middle of the school year can cause her to experience high levels of stress and anxiety. She may fear moving away from her friends and classmates or may simply be more comfortable in the setting she has come to know. It is important for teachers, administrators and parents to work together to determine when a child should be moved to a different classroom.
  1. High Achievement Level

    • Writing on Scholastic.com's website, educator Samantha Cleaver states that children who are reaching higher achievement levels than other students at their grade level may become bored in school. Communicate with your child's teacher to determine whether or not his school has a specific track for students who are achieving at a higher grade level. In some cases your child may need to move to a different grade-level class. However, sometimes a simple change to a higher-level math class within the same grade level may do the trick.

    Child Needs Extra Help

    • If your child is not achieving at the same level as the rest of her classmates or if she is struggling with one particular subject area, consider moving your child to a different classroom where she can get some extra help. Many schools have designed a track for students who need additional instruction. Talk with your school's administrators to determine whether or not your school has a class designed to give your student extra help. You should also consider private tutoring to help your children get the extra assistance they need.

    Extreme Discord with Teacher

    • Your child is going to have many teachers throughout his academic career. It is almost a guarantee that he is not going to get along with all of his teachers. Most of the time you will probably have to help your student learn to get along with his teacher. However, if your child is struggling with any type of abuse from the teacher it is important that you talk with your school's administrators. They will help you move your child to a different classroom if the teacher cannot be removed.

    Extreme Cases of Bullying

    • Many experts agree that moving a child to a different classroom because they are being bullied is not the answer to the bullying problem. In fact, in some cases it may make things worse. However, if your child is not able to learn or feels that her life is in danger in a particular classroom, someone needs to be moved to a different classroom. Work with your school's administration to determine whether your child or the bully can be moved to a different classroom as a part of a successful anti-bullying strategy.
