How to Create a Digital Teacher's Portfolio

A digital teacher's portfolio allows you to express your philosophy of education, share student accomplishments, work samples and track progress. A digital portfolio should also include self-reflective blogging and media content from lessons. Teachers can use a variety of platforms to make a reflective portfolio, including Wordpress, EduBlogs, Weebly, EverNote and Google Apps. Most of these applications and platforms are free or at least free for educators. One way in which a digital portfolio differs from a traditional one is that it may have interactive content. However, if you use student pictures or identifiable material, you should obtain parental permission first.

The platform you use will affect how you upload content. Pick a content management system that is easy for you to access. Many people find Wordpress easy to use. Go the Wordpress website and pick a user name and password. When you log in to the CMS, you can start adding blogs, video, pictures, audio and other content. The advantage to using a CMS is that you don't need HTML coding skills to create an attractive site with pre-made templates. These will allow users to customize the look and feel of the site with a minimal learning curve, and without having to learn file transfer protocol. Wordpress also offers a section to add in custom style sheets if you like designing your own sites.

Wordpress has a navigation strip across the top and the left side of the screen. You can create permanent pages about you and your students, highlight achievements or share other sites of interest to your parents and readers. The post function has buttons above it to add media, including pictures, audio and video. The content is uploaded into your media gallery and then you insert it into the post. If you choose a different platform, like Weebly or Google's BlogSpot, the layout will be slightly different but the functions will be very similar. EverNote's interface is probably the most different, and is reminiscent of Microsoft's OneNote. Its main advantage is that it allows you to install a browser toolbar that archives web pages. EverNote lets you create individual notebooks to manage content, and you can limit access to it for privacy and data integrity.

Once you are comfortable with the interface, create permanent pages for easier navigation of your digital portfolio. A permanent page will be on the navigation tabs or links of your teaching blog. You should include things like student achievement, video of lessons, your philosophy of education, a curriculum vitae or resume and awards from your academic and teaching career. Your chronological archived blog entries should include things like lesson plans and self-reflections on classes.
