How to Create Anchor Charts for Classrooms

Anchor charts can play a large role in helping students, especially younger students, become more involved in the learning process. They are created by developing a main heading or theme and then listing related items or ideas underneath the main heading. Because the charts are created in an interactive manner, students play a large role in determining what ultimately ends up on the chart. In addition to being a helpful learning tool, anchor charts are easy to create as only basic materials that are readily available in a classroom are needed.

Instructions

    • 1

Write out the theme or main concept that will be used to create the chart in large letters at the top of the dry erase board or easel pad. Underline the words for emphasis as well as to separate them from the text that will be added later.

    • 2

Ask the students for ideas on words and phrases related to the chart's theme. For instance, if the chart's theme is "Where to Read," students might suggest locations such as outdoors or in a chair. Be creative and help the students come up with ideas if they have difficulty starting the chart.

    • 3

Write the ideas suggested by the students on the chart directly below the heading. Allow students to record the ideas on the chart if it is practical and try to encourage active participation by all of the students. The chart will serve as a record of the brainstorming session so allow all of the students to have their say. Be creative and remember that the actual chart is less important than the process used to create it.

    • 4

Place the newly created chart in a location that can be easily seen by all of the students. The chart can be extremely helpful for them as they reflect back on the brainstorming session responsible for its creation.
