How to Create Attitude Surveys for Students

Teachers can use student attitude surveys for a variety of reasons. These surveys can help assess students' abilities, knowledge and conceptions at the beginning of a topic or unit. They can give teachers valuable insight on how to appropriately interact with each student. Student attitude surveys can also be administered after a teaching a particular unit or an entire class. This can provide feedback that can be used to modify upcoming units or lessons to be more effective.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the goal of the survey. For example, the survey could target student attitudes about working in groups or the students' perceived efficacy in an academic subject area. Depending on the focus of the survey, it can help guide instruction or personal student/teacher interactions.

    • 2

Pick a format for the survey. This depends on the targets of the survey and the ages of the students. Older students might answer open-ended questions, while younger students may complete a survey that requires they choose from a list of provided responses.

    • 3

Write only questions that are related to your classroom goal. Don't include personal or embarrassing questions.

    • 4

Write the questions in a simple and straightforward style. Students should easily understand every question on the survey.

    • 5

Keep the survey short. Limit it to one page or less.

    • 6

Include clear instructions on how to complete the survey. Also make certain to fully explain the purpose of the survey and how it will be used.
