How to Put Together a Simple Newsletter

Creating a newsletter can be a way to communicate important dates to parents, let them know what concepts are being taught and announce accomplishments. Newsletters can be created as a school, a grade level or for an individual class. Use Microsoft Publisher or other software programs to create the newsletter.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a blank document in Microsoft Word and choose a theme font and the size of the font for the title. Think of a title of your newsletter. For example, if it's for first grade, name it First Grade Flash. Submit Your Article.com also suggests deciding if the newsletter will have a logo at the top. This could be the school district's logo or the school's mascot. Type the title of the newsletter using a large font size such as 36 or 48 and click on the icon to center text.

    • 2

Decide the number of sections you want to have in your newsletter. After pressing enter, click on the page layout tab to choose the number of columns the newsletter will have. Click "more columns" and choose "this point forward" next to "apply to." This prevents the title from being set up as columns. Choose the number of columns the newsletter will have from the "presets" section.

    • 3

Label each section of the newsletter with a heading. Do this by giving each column a title. Choose a theme font and font size the same way you did for the title. Press enter until the cursor moves to the next column and repeat the process. Sample headings include parent corner, instructional focus and students of the month.

    • 4

Type the information in each section once you have labeled the headings. Choose a theme font and font size that's easy to read. Make subheadings bold under headings that have subsections. This makes the subsections stand out. For example, in the instructional focus section, bold subheadings for subjects like Reading, Language Arts and Math. Highlight the heading and then click the "B" in the toolbar at the top of the page or press "ctrl" and "B" at the same time. Click anywhere on the page to move on.

    • 5

Choose a theme for the newsletter. Themes can be seasonal like fall, spring and winter or by holidays like Christmas, Valentine's Day and St. Patrick's Day. Add clip art to your newsletter to make it more aesthetically pleasing. Click the insert tab and then "clip art." When the clip art search column opens, type a word in the search box that represents your theme and then click "go." When you find the picture you want, place the cursor where you want the clip art to go in the newsletter and then click the picture you want to use. If the picture is too big, hover the cursor over the corner of the clip art until you see the arrow. Hold the left side of the mouse down and move the arrow in a downward angle to shrink the clip art. Repeat the process to place pictures throughout the newsletter.
