Scan written material first. Read any written directions thoroughly for content. Examples of written directions may be test questions in school or the label on a medication. Ask yourself what is the point being made? If you have any questions, ask the person administering the test or the pharmacist, or whoever else may be the creator of the written material.
Look at the person providing verbal directions in school or work environments. Pay attention and make eye contact as he is speaking. Repeat the spoken directions in entirety to yourself. Make sure you understand what you need to accomplish.
Listen for any verbal cues being made. Ask questions if you do not understand. Carry out the task while it is fresh in your mind.
