How to Cite an Album

An effective bibliography gives readers information about a resource to allow them to find it for themselves. Some common resources included in bibliographies are books, websites, journals or news articles. However, there are occasions when you may need to cite a less-common source, such as a music album. There is a correct way to cite albums in APA and MLA formats.

Instructions

  1. Cite an album in APA format

    • 1

      Write the performer's last name, followed by a comma and the performer's first initial. Follow the name with a period.

      Put the album's year of release inside parentheses. Follow the year with a period outside the parentheses.

      Add the title of the album and italicize it. Then write the format of the album inside brackets. Follow the end bracket with a period.

      Note the location in which the album was recorded and follow it with a colon and a space. Write the name of the record label, followed by a period. The finished citation should look like this:

      Fitzgerald, E. (1954). Songs in a Mellow Mood [Audio Recording]. Nashville: MCA Records.

    Cite an album in MLA format

      Write the artist's last name, followed by a comma and the artist's first name. Follow the name with a period.

      Add the title of the album and underline it. Follow the title with a period.

      Note the location where the album was recorded. Follow it with a colon and a space.

      Write the name of the record label. Follow it with a comma and the year the album was released. Follow the year with a period. The finished citation should look like this:

      Fitzgerald, Ella. Songs in a Mellow Mood. Nashville: MCA Records, 1954. CD.
