How to Critique a Briefing Paper

A briefing paper provides clear and concise information about an issue. Briefings are used frequently in government to keep high-ranking officials abreast of changes and updates regarding issues and topics that require swift and informed decisions. In addition to proving a clear analysis of the issue or situation, a briefing will often include proposals or suggestions for action. Briefing papers are often assigned in educational settings to provide students the opportunity to practice and improve their briefing skills. There are several key features to a strong briefing paper that educators should look for when critiquing a student's work.

      Identify the purpose, which is an articular summary of the issue, and check whether it includes relevant and pertinent background information that will help the reader understand the context of the issue. The purpose should clearly state why the issue is important and why it demands the reader's immediate attention and action.

      Look for a meticulously researched, concise and organized summary of facts. This section should cover the current state of the issue, any recent developments and statements supported by direct empirical evidence. It should avoid overly technical jargon and come from a fact-driven and bias-free perspective. When critiquing this section, double-check the facts and deduct points for any discrepancies or errors.

      Evaluate the conclusion based on its persuasiveness and feasibility. It should offer a solution and outline the initial steps that can be taken to implement the solution as well as point out potential obstacles. It must clearly prove it is a superior solution to other options by directly stating and discrediting those alternatives. The recommendation should be substantiated by the evidence offered in the summary of facts and should demonstrate an understanding of the reader's needs.
