Old Ways to Teach Kids to Spell

Even old ways of teaching spelling can be exciting if you can motivate students to care about it. Spelling is an integral component of any student's education because as every student matriculates to the next grade, or even college, the responsibility of knowing how to spell properly increases. It's best to get an early start since reading and writing is a fundamental part of every student's education.
  1. Dictionary

    • Have the kids copy words and their definitions from the dictionary. You should also require them to write out the phonetic spelling so that they can learn how to correctly pronounce the word. This trick helps them develop the skills to recognize how to spell unfamiliar words through sound recognition. You can cover more words by instructing each student to copy a word beginning with a different letter. You can then review the spelling of the words that each student found in the dictionary as an entire class.

    Flash Cards

    • Kids can use flash cards in groups or by themselves, but groups are preferable. One of the ways to use flash cards is to have one or more cards with similar, but incorrect, spellings for each of the words the kids must know. There must also be a card for each word that has the correct spelling. In groups of two, one student should turn over each correctly spelled word in addition to its incorrect spellings. The other student must then decipher which of the spellings is the correct one. A good way to reinforce the the student's ability to recognize the correct word is to color coordinate the back of each flash card. The incorrectly spelled words should also be spelled in red lettering on the back of the flash cards, while the flash cards with the correct spellings should have the word spelled on the back of the card in green lettering.

    Spelling Bee

    • Spelling bees provide students a forum to practice their spelling skills.

Spelling bees are a competitive way for students to showcase their spelling skills. The desire to win and gain respect from both peers and teachers can be a strong impetus for students to learn how to spell. The spelling bee should include words that the kids know they are responsible for, but it it should also use words with which they are likely unfamiliar. This will test their ability to spell words by recognizing familiar sounds, as well as spell words that they may have already encountered in their own reading. Make sure the unfamiliar words are of a comparable level of difficulty.

    Word Wall

    • A word wall is essentially a collection of words the kids must learn that they can see every day. Use a board or portion of the chalkboard that is visible to the students. Either write or post words the kids need to learn. A couple of ways to remind them of the spelling is to use the words in your lessons or encourage the students to use the words in their responses. When other students recognize the word, you can encourage the class to spell the word out together.
