How to Make an Erupting Volcano With Vinegar or Salt

An erupting volcano, made with simple materials that you may already have on hand, is an exciting and engaging way to foster enthusiasm for science. Besides being a hands-on activity or potential science fair entry, participants learn some of the trademark characteristics of volcanic action up close. Science enthusiasts of all ages will find that a volcano experiment makes for an invigorating project that emphasizes how powerful the quick release of carbon dioxide (CO2) is.

Things You'll Need

  • Vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Box or work area
  • Salt
  • Bottle of diet soda
  • Sand
  • Empty plastic bottle

Instructions

  1. Build a Volcano

    • 1

      Stand the empty bottle up on its base in a box or on a work area you don't mind getting dirty.

      Surround the bottle with wet sand to create a mound. Make sure the bottle mouth remains reachable.

      Cover the sand with paper and paint a landscape on it, decorate the sand, or paint a background setting for the volcano.

    Make an Eruption out of Vinegar and Baking Soda

      Pour one-quarter cup vinegar into the bottle. If it's easier, you can do this before building the sand mound.

      Add 2 tbsp. baking soda quickly.

      Stand back and wait for the eruption.

    Make an Eruption out of Salt and Diet Soda

      Replace the empty plastic bottle with a full bottle of diet soda.

    • 8

      Add 2 tbsp. salt to the bottle quickly.

    • 9

      Stand back and wait for the eruption.
