How to Make a Baking Soda & Vinegar Reaction Bag

Science is an exciting subject for kids, especially when they get to try hands-on experiments. One such experiment is making a baking soda and vinegar reaction bag. When you mix baking soda and vinegar, a chemical reaction takes place--the creation of carbon dioxide gas. As the two compounds come together, the result makes quite a bang.

Things You'll Need

  • White distilled vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Plastic freezer bag with zip closure
  • Measuring spoon

Instructions

    • 1

Pour ½ cup of white distilled vinegar into a plastic freezer bag with a zip closure. Use a medium to large freezer bag for this carbon dioxide experiment.

    • 2

Pour 2 tsp. of baking soda inside the plastic bag.

    • 3

Close the plastic bag quickly with the zip closure. Make sure to close the bag securely, because air will prevent the vinegar and baking soda from reacting.

    • 4

Hold the bag away from your face and watch it inflate. The pressure will build and cause the zip closure to come apart with a "pop."
