How to Make a Fake Tornado

Teaching a room full of elementary school-aged children about weather can be difficult, especially if the children appear bored or restless. Make the class more exciting by offering the kids a chance to become interactive with weather. For example, show the children how to construct a fake tornado, using only a few materials that can be purchased from a supermarket or found around a house or classroom. This will allow the kids to see first-hand how a tornado moves and acts in real life.

Instructions

    • 1

Empty out two 2-liter soda bottles, and rinse them out completely with water.

    • 2

Fill one of the soda bottles halfway full of water. Leave the second soda bottle empty.

    • 3

Add 5 drops of food coloring into the water-filled soda bottle. Select any color of food coloring that you prefer.

    • 4

Wipe off the openings of both soda bottles with a dry washcloth to remove any moisture.

    • 5

Place the empty soda bottle opening on top of the water-filled soda bottle opening. Wrap duct tape tightly around the openings where the two bottles are connected. Rub your hand around the taped area to ensure the area is tightly sealed.

    • 6

Turn the connected bottles upside down to watch the colored water transform into a whirling tornado.
