How to Use Vertical Curriculum Alignment

Vertical curriculum alignment takes into the account both the higher and lower grade levels in relation to what you are teaching. An ideal curriculum will have both a vertical and horizontal alignment, ensuring it both compliments other grade levels and state standards. The best way to test your vertical alignment going into the new school year is to review your student's end- of-the-year concept tests, compared to the expectations for the next grade level.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain a copy of the previous grade level and next grade level's curriculums.

    • 2

Obtain a copy of the state standards for your grade level and subject area.

    • 3

Create a rough outline of your curriculum, avoiding unnecessary review and overlap with the previous grade and ensuring that you lay the foundation for the next grade. For example, if you are teaching third grade English, you should not need to review consonant and vowel sounds with your students. Instead, you should be able to simply begin with a basic reader book to determine the student's overall reading level.

    • 4

Fill in your rough outline with assignments and activities, do not add much detail yet, as plans may be changed by the review board.

    • 5

Present copies of your curriculum to the review board, encouraging a thorough examination of how you've met the requirements and prepared the students of the next level.

    • 6

Make any changes in accordance with the board's feedback.
