How to Design Appropriate Objectives in the Classroom

Teachers design their classroom lessons around an objective. The objective is the goal of the lesson, what the teacher wants students to learn by completing the assigned activities. Objectives align with what student the students are learning based on what grade level they are in and what state standards are assigned to that grade level. Objectives help make the connection between expectations, teaching and grading. Designing appropriate objectives for a classroom will enhance student learning and understanding.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the state standard that will be addressed by the lesson. State standards are located on the state's department of education website.

    • 2

Outline the conditions needed for the student to demonstrate knowledge. For example, if a third-grade student needs to multiply one-digit whole numbers by multiples of 10 the condition for the objective can be "Using manipulatives"

    • 3

Identify what the students will learn or do, using a verb. For example, an appropriate description of student learning is "students will count by 5s."

    • 4

Describe the student's level of performance in relation to the objective. For example: "from 0 to 20 with 80 percent accuracy"

    • 5

After identifying the criteria for the condition, student learning performance and level of performance, put the objective together, "Using manipulatives, the student will count by 5s from 0 to20 with 80 percent accuracy."
