Use flash cards for a daily drill. Make your own with index cards. Write one state name on each card with a bright marker. Display a few cards at a time. For example, drill students on states by region. After they learn the southeast states, move on to the southwest. Free printable cards are available online at Flashcard Machine.
Help students remember states alphabetically. Associating names of states with their first letter gives students a cuing system to help them remember. Education.com has a printable worksheet available for student practice.
Display a U.S. map with names of states covered. You can draw a map outline on chart paper using an overhead projector or buy a map and place sticky notes over their names. Point to states in random order or by region to help students review.
Allow children to play online map games if you have computers in your room or access to the school's computer lab. Sheppard's Software has an interactive map in which students drag states by shape to their correct place. The game keeps score and shows children where the state should be placed if they are incorrect the first time.
