Internet Games for Kids to Learn the 50 States

Learning the location, spelling and the capital city of the 50 states for students has changed since the use of the Internet in classrooms became commonplace. Now there is a selection of Internet websites that actively engage the students and help them learn where the state is located and its capital city, along with many more interesting geographical and trivia facts about the states.
  1. Spelling

    • The timed spell the state game will bring out the competitiveness in your students.

From Massachusetts to Ohio, learning to spell the 50 states is a feat that requires commitment. There are Internet sites that require the player to spell the name of the state correctly to succeed at the game. FunBrain.com's "Where Is THAT?" helps students learn the spelling of the state while recognizing its location on the U.S. map. When the highlighted state's name is spelled correctly, the student receives one point. If the student doesn't spell it correctly, the game shows the correct spelling. Sporcle.com has a timed spelling-the-states game. The player is given 10 minutes to type all of the states' names. There is a prompt in the game to type any state's name. If it is typed correctly, the name floats to the correct state on the blank outline map. If it is typed incorrectly, the name doesn't float to the location until it is spelled correctly.

    Location

    • Putting the states in their proper location is a puzzle.

Learning where the states are located through the Internet game "Ameriquake" on Mr.Nussbaum.com is engaging and effective. The game starts out with all the states' names labeled on an outline map. There is a simulated earthquake ,and all of the states' names fall off of the map. It is the player's job to drag and drop all states' names back onto the map in the proper location before time runs out.

At Sheppardsoftware.com's U.S.A. Games, the player can choose the level of difficulty from one to nine. Level one asks the player to click on a state on the outline map to learn its name. In level nine, there is a blank map of the United States. The player drags, rotates and sizes a state's outline into its proper location in the country. The only guidelines on the country map are the latitude and longitude lines, bodies of water and waterways. This is the expert level of locating the states.

    Capital City

    • At KidsGeo.com, the players match the capital city with a highlighted state on the map of the U.S. in "Capital Catch." The game gives a list of four capitals for the player to choose from. Mrs. Jones Sing Along website offers an unforgettable song for learning the states and capitals to the tune of "Turkey in the Straw."

    Other Geographical and Historical Facts

    • The golden poppy is California's state flower.

Yourchildlearns.com offers a United States geography game. The players are asked to place mountain ranges, rivers, lakes and volcanoes onto a blank map of the United States. If the pupil gets the location right, the feature is implanted on the map. If the player is wrong, the feature disappears and then reappears to give the player another chance at placement. Sporcle.com offers a game that asks the player to identify state flags, state flowers and a smorgasbord of other state trivia games.
