United States Constitution Games for Kids

The U.S. Constitution is one of the most important documents in American history. It gives U.S. citizens rights and freedoms. The opening words of the Constitution, "We the people," begin what's known as the Preamble. Many people cannot recite or even understand the Preamble. But everyone, even children, can understand the Constitution and its significance. Help children memorize the amendments and study the Constitution in preparation for these fun review games.
  1. Bill of Rights Number Game

    • The Bill of Rights comprises the first 10 amendments (out of 27) in the Constitution. Put paper strips numbered 1 through 10 in a bowl and have children draw them out one by one. The student then explains the amendment with the corresponding number. For instance, if the child were to pull out the number 1, he would say that the First Amendment guarantees freedom of expression. Points are granted for every correct answer.

    Class Constitution

    • To help students understand how the Constitution developed and how it is crucial to our daily activities, have them write a classroom constitution. This game will show students that government is part of our lives and serves many useful functions. Have each student generate a list of problems the class is experiencing (talking out of turn, for example) and possible solutions. Also list classroom goals and how to achieve them. Have students turn in their list to the teacher, who will choose two students' works to display in class (anonymously) and ask children to vote on which constitution they would like to adopt into class law. Winner of contest will be announced at the end of voting period.

    Preamble Shuffle

    • The Preamble consists of 52 words. Make one index card for every word of the Preamble. Shuffle the cards, lay them on a table and have students take turns putting the words in the correct order. The student who gets the correct order of words in the shortest time is the winner.

    Constitution Trivia

    • Ask the class trivia questions about the Constitution (such as the year it was written, the authors' names, and so on). The first student to raise his hand gets the first chance to answer the question. The student with the most correct answers wins the game.
