How to Make a King Menes Crown

Historians list King Menes of Memphis as Egypt’s first pharaoh. Recognized as a creator of early Egyptian laws, he appears on the south wall mural in the United States Supreme Court room. Teachers recognize him in early Egyptian history as the king who united the upper and lower Egyptian kingdoms. Historians refer to Menes as the king who wore “the White Crown of Upper Egypt and the Red Crown of Lower Egypt.” His crown, both red and white, represented the unified kingdom.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the circumference of the head of the person who will wear the double crown. Add an inch to the measurement.

    • 2

Use a piece of red construction paper 12-by-18 inches. Begin your drawing 2 inches above the bottom of the paper. Draw a rectangle that is as wide as the head circumference plus 1 inch, and 4 inches tall.

    • 3

Mark the bottom edge of the rectangle into four equal sections. Curve the two outer sections so they are 3 inches tall at the end. Drop the bottom edge of the center section so you reach the bottom edge of the paper 2 inches on either side of the center mark and curve upward to meet the marks at the one-quarter mark. This will give you a deep squared section that drops toward the neck at the back of the head and a sloping contour that rides along the middle of the forehead in the front.

    • 4

Directly above the dropped segment in the middle of the red crown, extend the top of the red segment straight up 6 inches. This will create a tall red rectangle 4-by-6 inches tall on the top edge of your crown. Directly above the dropped segment in the middle of the red crown, extend the top of the red segment straight up six inches. This will create a tall red rectangle 4-by-6 inches tall on the top edge of your crown.

    • 5

Cut the red crown out and tape it together with a 1/2-inch overlap. Fit it to the head and make curved notches over the ears to fit more comfortably.

    • 6

Use the red construction paper remnants for the upper segment and head of a cobra. Draw the upper segment 3 inches long and 2 inches wide and the cobra head 2.5 inches long and 4 inches wide at the widest part. Draw in the details of the cobra skin. Fold ½ inch of the body segment under and attach it to the center front of the crown. Use double-sided tape to secure the segment to the exterior of the crown so the cobra rises straight up.

    • 7

Draw 2 identical wine bottle or bowling pin shapes 8 inches tall on a sheet of 8.5 by 11-inch white card stock. Cut out each shape and tape them together using transparent tape.

    • 8

Punch a small hole in the center front of your white crown five inches from the top. Insert a red pipe cleaner into the hole and tape the end in place pointed up. Curl the pipe cleaner end into a spiral extending up. Stuff an inflated balloon into the white crown to shape it and set it inside the top of the red crown.
