How to Make a T-Table

Organizing data so that it is easily evaluated and understood is a function of a t-table. T-tables are useful in math and science class. They show trends in science when one variable changes. A t-table is a way to display the growth of a bean plant over time in the primary classroom. Time is the variable in this example. The t-table is used in math class to analyze the relationship between numbers. Algebraic functions are displayed on a t-table to help students determine how the function would affect any number.

Instructions

    • 1

Label the table with a title. Be specific when writing the title. Name exactly what is being measured or observed. In the bean seedling example, the table is labeled "Daily Growth of a Bean Seedling in Centimeters."

    • 2

Draw the table. A t-table has one vertical line that intersects a horizontal line. Make the horizontal line wide enough to record the information collected. The horizontal line should be placed enough distance from the top of the vertical line so a label can be placed on each side of the intersecting line. The table looks like a lowercase letter "t."

    • 3

Label each side of the "t." The labels reflect what you are observing or measuring in your experiment. In the bean experiment, the labels are "Number of Days" and "Growth of Bean Seedling in Centimeters."

    • 4

Enter the data from your experiment. Fill in each side of the t-table as the observations are made. Make conclusions based on the data that has been collected. If the bean seedling grows 3 centimeters every seven days, predict how tall it will be in 21 days

    • 5

Write "In" and "Out" for the t-table labels in math. A math t-table does not need a graph title. The "In" numbers have a relationship to the "Out" numbers. The job of the mathematician is to find that relationship and figure out the rule. For instance, if the "In" column has listed 10, 11 and 12, and the "Out" column has 21, 23 and 25, then the rule for any number is n x 2 + 1.
