How to Make a Dissection

Dissection is a popular practice in public schools for students studying biology. Common dissection subjects include fetal pigs, cats and frogs. Medical students dissect human bodies as a rite of passage. Dissection teaches about anatomy as well as the life cycle of different types of living things. Completing a dissection is a step-by-step process usually completed in one class period.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the dead frog by placing it in an aluminum pan. The pan serves as a container for the frog's parts and any juices it may secrete.

    • 2

Vivisect the frog by cutting it down the middle, splitting its skin into two parts. This exposes the innards and allows you to remove any organs for examination neatly.

    • 3

Pull the frog skin apart and pin it back. This allows students to see the natural organization of all frog parts within its body.

    • 4

Remove organs for examination. If the organs are too small or delicate to manipulate with the fingers, gently use the blade of the scalpel to pry them from the carcass.

    • 5

Make note of any observations during the dissection. Compare the frog's anatomy to human anatomy, and locate any body parts from the diagrams studied in class.
