How to Make Spelling Fun for Children Who Hate It

Students learn how to spell a variety of words in elementary school. In first or second grade, they may learn to spell words like "door" or "apple." By fifth or sixth grade, they are expected to spell harder words like "photography" and "sarsaparilla." While spelling comes easy for some students, others hate the subject. As a teacher, you can use several activities and games in class to make spelling fun for your students.

Instructions

    • 1

Play a spelling race in the classroom. Divide the students into two teams. Have a student from each team come to the board and spell a word you give them. The student who spells the word correctly first receives a point for his team. After every student has had a turn at the board, give the team with the most points a prize.

    • 2

Ask your students to stand in a circle to play a game of Sparkle. Call out a word that you want spelled. Have the first student say the first letter of the word, the second student say the second letter of the word and so on until the word is spelled. Instruct the student next to the child who completed the word to say, "Spelling sparkle." If a student misses a letter, he has to sit down. Give a prize to the last student standing.

    • 3

Call out words like "butterfly" or "ocean" and ask your students to spell them by making the letters in the words with pieces of candy such as candy-coated chocolates. Walk around the classroom to see how fast they can use candy to spell the words. Allow the children to eat the candy at the end of the activity.

    • 4

Give each student an old newspaper or magazine. Instruct them to cut out letters from the text and glue them on a piece of paper to spell out the words you call out. Give a prize to the student who finishes first.
