How to Make Math Fun for a Kid Who Only Likes to Read

While some kids are good at solving math problems, others are better at reading. For kids who prefer reading, math problems probably seem boring and difficult. This can prevent them from taking math seriously, causing them to fall behind. If one of your kids isn't fond of math, use games and activities at home to show him how much fun math can be.

Instructions

    • 1

Use real objects when teaching your kid how to add or subtract such as candy or cereal. Put six jellybeans on a plate. Take away two of them and ask her how many jellybeans are left. After you ask her a few addition and subtraction problems, let her eat the jellybeans.

    • 2

Teach your kid how to recognize geometric shapes by having her search around the house for them. Give her five minutes to find two rectangles, four squares and three circles. When time is up, ask her to show you what she found.

    • 3

Find online math games for him to play. Choose games that will help him learn addition, subtraction, fractions, percents and decimals.

    • 4

Play guess the number with your kid. Have her think of a number between one and 100. She can ask questions like "Is the number greater than 50?" or "Is the number divisible by four?" Once you guess the number, let her guess what number you are thinking of. By playing this game, your kid can gain a better understanding of the characteristics and meanings of numbers.

    • 5

Integrate reading into math time. Have your kid read a math-related storybook. After he is finished reading, give him a worksheet to see if he understood what he read.

    • 6

Give your kid math word problems to work on. By doing word problems, he can practice his math skills and read at the same time.
