Cartouche Necklace Project

A cartouche necklace project is an excellent art project to accompany a unit of study on Egypt or ancient cultures. Teach children that ancient Egyptians believed that their names should be written down somewhere, and that a cartouche was often used to record the names of kings and queens. Students will enjoy learning about cartouche, and then using the project to personalize what they have learned into a necklace all their own, using their own initials.
  1. Create the Hieroglyphics

    • Use a book on hieroglyphics to print worksheets out to show children the letters of the alphabet written in hieroglyphics. Let them practice writing their name or initials using the hieroglyphics until they are happy with the way it looks.

    The Ovals

    • Have the students cut large ovals, approximately six inches long and three inches wide out of colored tag board. Have them cut a slightly smaller oval out of construction paper in a contrasting color. For younger students, you may want to provide a template for them to trace, or cut the ovals for them. Students fourth grade or higher can measure and cut the paper and tag board themselves.

    Draw the figures

    • Have the students draw the hieroglyphics in pencil on the construction paper, with one symbol on top of the other. After they are happy with the pencil drawings and have corrected any mistakes, have them trace over the hieroglyphics with a thin colored marker. Then use a glue stick to attach the construction paper oval to the tag board oval, centering it so that the tag board creates a frame.

    String the necklace

    • Using a single hole puncher, punch holes in the very top center of the oval. Thread approximately eighteen inches of yarn or thin ribbon through the hole and tie it in a knot. Let the children wear the necklaces.
