Ideas on How to Decorate Doors for Literacy Week

Promoting reading during Literacy Week is accomplished by decorating the door with positive and interactive literacy ideas. Promoting awareness about the importance of the written word is the objective of the decorated classroom doors. Featuring the students, involving them in the displays and competitions highlighted on the door will ensure their awareness is increased about great books and authors to read.
  1. Got Books

    • Highlight the books being read by the students in your class with a 'Got Books?' door for Literacy Week. Use the theme from the popular milk advertisements to showcase books. Cover the door with black bulletin board paper. Take a digital portrait photo of each student holding the book they are reading. Use a little white toothpaste on the upper lip to resemble milk on the upper lip, if desired in the photo. Place the portraits on the door. Cut out of white paper the letters "Got Books?" to place on the door.

    In the Beginning

    • Many books have memorable beginnings that even primary students will be able to identify the book the beginning came from. For instance, "Until he was four years old, James Henry Trotter had a happy life,"will be recognized by third through fifth grade students as the first words from "James and the Giant Peach." Type and number opening sentences from popular age-appropriate books. Print out the beginning lines and post them on the Literacy Week door. Provide numbered paper slips for the students to name the titles of the books represented. Provide bookmarks for students that name the books.

    Author Study

    • Showcase a popular author among the students of the classroom by printing the covers of books from that author. Most covers can be located on the Internet, particularly on authors' websites or a bookstore site. Jan Brett has a web page filled with her cover art. Dr. Seuss' covers are appropriate and exciting for a kindergarten classroom to have on their door. Place the covers on the door of the classroom after covering the door completely with bulletin board paper.

    And the Winner Is . . .

    • Provide a trophy-themed Literacy Week door to showcase the students' favorite books. Cover the door with bulletin board paper for Literacy Week. Cut a trophy out of gold paper or spray paint the paper gold labeled "Best Book of the Year." Provide slips of paper with "And the Winner Is... " typed on it. Let the students fill in the title of their favorite book to place on the door around the trophy. Sharing their favorite book as a trophy-winning book with everyone that walks by is a way to promote Literacy Week.
