How to Make Flashcards to Help Children With Sounding Out Words

Simple flashcards can be an inexpensive and effective means for parents to encourage early phonics education at home. Prior to beginning lessons on sounding out simple words with young students, make sure they have achieved a mastery of the alphabet. Create an atmosphere of fun when working on flashcards at home. Including images on the cards can engage young pre-readers. Award small prizes and words of affirmation to hard-working students, and limit practice sessions to 10 minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Compile a list of 20 one-syllable nouns that will be used on the flashcards. Number the cards from 1 to 20 to aid in organization and tracking progress while working with the student. Write the digit in small print in the upper right corner of one side of the index card.

    • 2

Write the simple, one-syllable words in the center of the card, on the side opposite the number. Drop the first letter off the word, and write the last letters in the upper left hand corner of the card. Separating the word into pieces will guide young students in sounding out the letters.

    • 3

Collect 20 small images that represent the words used on the flashcards. Magazines images, used books and printed clip art can serve as resources for images of simple nouns. Cut out the pictures, glue to the center of the numbered side of the flash card, and allow the glue to dry undisturbed for approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Laminate the completed cards for a more durable final product.
