How to Help Children With Typing

The widespread use of computers at home and at school has made it necessary for children to learn to type. A child can no longer function at school without being able to use a keyboard. Being able to efficiently navigate the keys of a keyboard will give your child an academic advantage as they are able to use computers to further their education.

Instructions

    • 1

Study the keyboard. Have your child spend 10 to 15 minutes becoming familiar with the keys on the keyboard, without touching.

    • 2

Teach your child the correct fingering positions, beginning with "home row." Instruct your child to place his thumbs on the space bar. His left fingers will be on the "a," "s," "d" and "f," beginning with the little finger on the letter "a." His right fingers will be on the ":," "l," "k" and "j," beginning with the little finger on the semi-colon/colon key.

    • 3

Drill your child on the home row. Call out letters and have your child press they key you called out using the appropriate finger. Once they have begun to memorize the letters, do not allow them to look at the keyboard.

    • 4

Show your child the fingerings for the remaining letters on the keyboard. Use the same method you used for home row to have your child practice memorizing where each key is located.

    • 5

Purchase a typing program at the store or online. There are many programs designed to teach children to type. They integrate games, and music to make the process exciting. In addition, they will diversify the learning process so that your child does not become weary from the drills.
