How do you get into teaching?

Requirements to Become a Teacher

1. Earn a bachelor's degree. All states require teachers to have at least a bachelor's degree. Programs for aspiring teachers typically take four years to complete.

2. Complete a teacher preparation program. These programs are designed to prepare future teachers with the knowledge and skills necessary to teach in their chosen field. Programs typically take one to two years to complete.

3. Pass a state-required teacher certification exam. All states require teachers to pass a standardized test of their knowledge and skills in the area they plan to teach.

4. Complete student teaching. Student teaching is a supervised teaching experience that gives aspiring teachers the opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge they have learned in their teacher preparation program. Student teaching typically lasts for one semester or one year.

5. Be licensed by the state. Once all other requirements have been completed, aspiring teachers can apply for a teaching license from their state. The application process usually includes providing evidence of a bachelor's degree, completion of a teacher preparation program, and passing a state-required teacher certification exam.

Alternative Paths to Teaching

In some states, there are alternative pathways to teaching for individuals who do not have a bachelor's degree in education or a traditional teaching certificate. These alternative pathways often include completing an alternative teacher preparation program or an internship. Check with your state's education agency to learn more about any available alternative pathways.

Additional Requirements

In addition to the requirements listed above, some states have additional requirements for teachers, such as:

- Physical education certification: Some states require teachers who teach physical education to have a physical education certification.

- Foreign language certification: Some states require teachers who teach foreign languages to have a foreign language certification.

- Special education certification: Some states require teachers who teach special education to have a special education certification.
