Discuss why effective writing is valuable. Explain that good writing is a useful skill for organizing their thoughts, creating compelling arguments and sharing their ideas with other people. This will encourage students to appreciate that a proficient writing ability is within their best interest, and that it can be a positive opportunity for expressing themselves.
Explain the writing process. Although everyone writes differently, it's useful for kids to understand that re-drafting their written work is a vital component towards making it better. Emphasize how useful it can be to receive feedback from their friends and family when creating a new piece of creative work, and encourage them to edit their writing to take that feedback into account if they believe it's a valuable point.
Conduct writing exercises. These are assignments that allow students to practice and apply their writing skills within new challenges. For example, you might encourage the kids to maintain a daily journal that discusses the events taking place in their lives, or you may want to contact a school in a different state to organize "pen pals" for the children to write regular letters to.
Create opportunities for the kids to talk about their own writing. This can be an opportunity to motivate them and support them when they experience difficulties. It can also be a useful chance for the kids to discuss how different ideas can be transferred into words and to learn about useful tips and techniques that might improve the overall quality of their work.
