How Do I Teach an Adult Writing Class?

Writing classes for adults should encourage development of strong critical thinking skills, and they should also be fun and unique. It's also important to show compassion for adult learners, and take extra time after class with students. When developing the class, think about what kind of writing class you're teaching. For example, if you're teaching a class on autobiographical writing, comb through books and magazine articles on this topic to spark ideas.

Encourage independent learning. If you're teaching classes on how to successfully write romance novels, give the students assignments that will challenge their writing skills and increase their creativity. For example, if you just taught a lesson on plot development, have each student write 10 plot summaries based on their past or current dating relationships. Then, ask them to present their ideas in front of the class.

Offer suggestions for improvement. If you're teaching lessons on scholarly journal writing but you notice that a few students are using too many long, direct quotes without properly attributing them, point your students in the right direction. Teach them how to paraphrase the long quotes that they find in their research materials, with proper attribution included.

Offer encouragement. If your students have improved in their essay writing class, let them know that you're proud of them, and that you believe in their ability to succeed in other types of writing classes, such as creative writing.

Help them locate good learning materials. If a student needs some good books on improving skills in poetry writing, bring him to the school or public library, or give recommendations of books or articles on creating poems. If a student struggles with sentence structure, let her borrow your books on improving English grammar.
