How to Teach an Adult Education Course

Community colleges are looking for people who can teach workshops on their campus and it's a great way to earn extra money and promote your business. You do not have to have a teacher's degree, but you need to be knowledgeable in the area you want to teach. It can be anything from PowerPoint to selling on eBay. Self-enrichment courses for adults are very popular and if you have marketable skill in a particular area, you may find it fun and monetarily to teach adults.

First you need to come up for an idea for a class. Do you sew or sell on eBay? Do you know magic or how to bake wedding cakes? Do you have a successful home based business, can you teach others how to do it? Select something that you know how to do really well that would be easy to teach to others in a weekend or two as most adult classes are only taught, one or two times a semester.

You need to write up your proposal for submission to the community college. Be as thorough as you can and write it concisely as it will be representing you as a potential adult education teacher.

    • 3

Write a class description of your course. Get a catalog of the adult education courses that the community college is offering and look at how the classes are described.

    • 4

Include a resume about yourself and how you are knowledgeable on the subject. It's not a typical resume as more a entertainment type of resume. You don't need to include your last 3 jobs, but more about anyone else you have taught this too, or how long you have been doing it. If applicable, include any other time you have lead a group of people and taught a workshop or class. For example, if you are a cook, list your school training or that you own a bakery. You can add a small photo of yourself on your resume, as long as you keep it under 2" x 2".

    • 5

Decide how many hours your class will be. The average is around 3-4 hours. Do a brief outline of what you will be teaching each hour, so that you will be able to go back to it when the community college calls to ask you more questions about your proposed class.

    • 6

Decide on how much you will be charging for your course and if there is any supplies that the students will need to bring or you will provide and they will need to purchase. For example: for a balloon artist class, you would supply the balloons, but you would require the students to pay $5.00 each for the balloons.
