Place the different types of fabrics, papers and textured items on a central table. The children will line up and feel the different items and proceed to their seats.
Discuss each item with the class. Allow the children to describe the first object using as many adjectives as possible. Use the word "texture" as often as possible. Kindergartners have a limited vocabulary, so extra assistance will be needed in steps two and three.
Ask the students what the word "texture" might mean after all the items have been reviewed. Have the class come up with a group definition for the word.
Print the class definition in large letters across the top of the large piece of paper. The definition needs to be sizable enough to capture the attention of everyone in the room after it is hung on the wall.
Call children to the paper one at a time to glue a piece of textured material to the paper. Students waiting for their turn will use crayons to draw their own textured materials on a blank piece of paper, as kindergarten children often find it difficult to wait.
Hang the finished collage in a conspicuous place in the classroom. The new poster can be used for review and for leading questions in class discussions.
