Focus on one study skill each day. You can do this at the beginning of class, then refer back to it as the lesson progresses. Allow time at the end of the lesson for students to practice the new skill. Typically, this will be quiet time when students work independently. Sample skills to teach include focusing on your task, completing the assignment in one sitting, following directions, outlining and taking notes.
Review the new study skill at the beginning of the next class. Ask students to comment on how the new skill helped them. Ask them to relate how they improved their homework performance with the new study skill. This reinforcement will improve retention of the skill, and the routine will be a signal to students that improving study skills is a daily effort.
Design classroom activities to teach study skills. You do not have to focus on this important aspect of your teaching only at the beginning of class. Create activities that require a single study skill, such as concentration. Ask students to focus quietly on their work for a set amount of time. It can be as little as five minutes at first. Lead a classroom discussion on how it felt to use the skill, and have students evaluate the usefulness of it.
Identify the skill, and explain what you expect students to learn from it.
