How to Learn How to Drive in Alabama

Learning how to drive can be an exciting time but it can also be nerve-wracking without proper instruction. Driving a car can represent independence for many people both young and old. According to the Research and Innovative Technology Administration, there were 3,753,550 licensed drivers in Alabama in 2008. You too can become a licensed driver in Alabama by learning from parents or other trusted drivers or attending driving schools that teach driving basics for a fee.

      Review driving rules. Read over the Alabama Driver License Manual. You can download the manual online at the Alabama Department of Public Safety's website. You should take notes while reviewing the manual.

      Obtain your learner's permit, or learner's license as it is referred to in Alabama. In Alabama, you can obtain your learner's license as young as 15 years old. You will need to take a written examination and pay a fee at your local driver's license office. The examination will consist of questions from the Alabama Driver License Manual.

      Practice driving. Once you have your learner's license, you can practice driving under certain restrictions. If you are only 15 years of age, you can operate a vehicle with a driver that is a licensed driving instructor and over the age of 21. If you are 16 or older, you can drive a car with any licensed driver in the seat next to you.

      Sign up for driver's education classes. If you are in high school, your school will often offer driver's education class where you can learn how to drive. Find out if your school does and sign up.

      Find a community driver's education or sign up for one online if you are not enrolled in high school or if your high school does not offer driver's education; you can still receive the extra guidance. Many communities offer a driving class for a small fee. There are also many online driver's education courses available.

      Attend driving school. There are driving schools in Alabama, such as the Alabama Driving School or Wyatt's Driving Academy. These schools, and others like it, allow you to practice driving with a driving instructor. A fee is typically associated with the lessons but you will be able to practice driving and most driving school provides the practice vehicle

      Schedule a road test with the driver's license office. After you feel comfortable driving and practiced driving, you can sign up for your road test. Once you pass the required road test, you will be a licensed driver in Alabama.
