How to Solve a Quadratic Using Square Root Property

Problems involving quadratic equations are frequently found in math text books designed to teach Algebra. While there are multiple ways to solve quadratic problems, one of the quickest involves taking the square root of both sides of the equation. Fortunately for Algebra students, the process for solving a quadratic using square roots is straightforward and can be completed using basic math principles and a calculator capable of taking the square root of a number.

  Ensure that the quadratic is written in the form of "a squared = b." If the quadratic is not written in this form, the use of the square root is not an efficient way to solve the problem.

  Take the square root of both sides of the equation, as anything done to one side must be done to the other. Use the calculator if necessary to calculate correctly. For instance, if the equation is "x squared = 16" take the square root of both x squared as well as 16.

  Complete the solution to the equation by recording the values received for the square roots. For instance, "x squared = 16" results in "x = 4."
