Kindergarten Round-Up Ideas

"Kindergarten Round-Up" lets children and parents learn about the new school through a series of events. Round-Up introduce both parent and child to the school, the child's teacher and layout of the class. Parents will also likely need to bring health records, proof of identity and address and fill out forms about their student at this time.
  1. Decorations

    • Play on the words "Round-Up" by decorating the classroom in a western theme. Use cowboys, cows and a western motif to make children more interested in coming to the class. Dress up in western-style clothing to further get children excited about the theme. Consider passing out small mementos to the students, such cowboy boot-shaped name tags.

    Schedule

    • Recreate part of the normal school day schedule so children and parents get a good idea of your teaching style. For example, hold a miniature circle time -- complete with a western story and song time -- and let the kids see how much fun learning will be in your class.

    Test for Readiness

    • Check students for school readiness by performing games such as "Simon Says," which helps indicate if a student can follow directions. Although you will teach students more about letters and numbers, the student should already have a basic knowledge about the names and sounds of letters as well as an understanding of numbers. Students should be able to sit quietly for about 15 to 20 minutes at one time, such as when listening to a story.

    Parent Tips

    • Give students a small craft to complete -- such as coloring a picture of a cowboy or cowgirl -- while you talk to the parents about how they can better prepare their kids for kindergarten. For example, tell parents to read to their children for at least 20 minutes a day, and limit the amount of time the child spends watching television.

Do not forget to go over the supplies list and things prohibited on the school grounds. Pass around a sign-up list asking for parent helpers, class moms and volunteers for field trips and class parties. Finally, have parents practice how to pick up their children at the end of the school day. This not only shows parents the correct way to pick their students up, but also lets students know what to expect on the first day of school.
