PTO Kindergarten Ideas

Take advantage of the enthusiasm of new kindergarten parents by inviting them to a Parent Teacher Organization-sponsored event. Parents new to the school will enjoy mingling with other new parents; in addition, the children will meet their new classmates and make new friends. Once the event has been decided, be sure to send invitations to the parents and request a response, so the PTO knows how many parents and children to accommodate.
  1. Movie Under the Stars

    • Plan a kid-friendly Movie Under the Stars night either at school or a local park large enough to accommodate the kindergarten families. Plan to set up the movie projector in front of a flat, plain building wall to use as a movie screen, or rent a large inflatable movie screen.

Arrange for licensing of the specific film and complete any paperwork required for park events prior to sending out the announcement. (Licensing can usually be handled online or through a phone call.) Allow free admission, but set up a concession stand to offer popcorn and drinks to the participants. Before the movie begins, talk about the PTO organization, how it benefits the school and how to join the PTO if parents are intererested.

    Ice Cream Social

    • Invite new kindergarten families to an Ice Cream Social to meet other families, introduce the children to each other and spread the word about the PTO. Prior to the event, reserve a space large enough to accommodate the families, with room for seating and an area to set up two or three games for the children to play when they finish with their ice cream. The school cafeteria or recess area are options. Send an announcement home to the families and request a response to verify how much ice cream to order. During the event, set up a booth to discuss the PTO and how it benefits the children and parents in school.

    Open House

    • Take advantage of the kindergarten open house to talk with new families in the school district. Most kindergarten open houses are scheduled at a different time than the rest of the school district to give parents more time to talk with teachers, explore the school and gather information about how they can become involved. Setup a booth or literature table in an area where parents will pass through. Have a board member of the PTO available to talk with parents to discuss how they can become involved with the PTO.

    Bubbles of Fun

    • Bring the kids down for a bubbling good time with a bubble meet-and-greet. The bubble fun can take place during a school open house or it can be planned separately. Set up bubble machines throughout a designated area, and set up bubble wands and bubble solution around the area to entice children to play together and join forces to make different bubbles. Talk to parents about the PTO and ask them to sign up to attend meetings.
