How to Find the Percent of Ratios

Ratios are a comparison between to amounts. Ratios are seen in various fields of study and used to determine, plan and monitor a wide variety of items. When reading a ratio, replace the colon symbol with the word "to". If comparing the amounts of water to oil in a recipe, one would say 3 to 5, and write it 3:5. A percent is a term used to express what the fraction of a whole is.

Instructions

    • 1

Divide the first number of the ratio by the second number in the ratio. For example, in the ratio 3:5, you would divide 3 by 5 and get .60.

    • 2

Move the decimal over 2 spaces to the right. This is the percent of ratio. For example, 3:5 = 3/5 = .60 = 60%.

    • 3

Move the decimal over two spaces to the right and round up the number following the decimal if there are more than two numbers after the decimal in Step 2. For example, 5:12 = 5/12 = .41666 = 41.666% = 41.7%
