How to Find the Worth of Unit Fractions

A unit fraction is a fraction that has a 1 as the numerator and a whole number as the denominator. Examples of unit fractions are 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5, and so forth. Finding the worth of the unit fraction can be helpful when you are working with two numbers that have the same denominators. For example, if you know that 5/8 of a total is 25, you can determine that 1/8 equals five. This allows you to determine that 7/8 of the total equals 35.

Instructions

    • 1

Convert your number into a regular fraction if it is a mixed number. A mixed number is a number that includes a whole number and a fraction. For example, if the mixed number is 2 1/2, convert it into the fraction 5/2.

    • 2

Determine the value of your number. For example, if you paid 2 1/2 dollars for an 8-pound bag of apples, the value of your number is 8 pounds.

    • 3

Divide the value of your number by the numerator, or top number, of the fraction to get the worth of the unit fraction. For example, divide 8 lbs (the value) by 5 (the numerator of 5/2 dollars), to get a result of 1.6 pounds for every 1/2 dollar (the unit fraction).
