How to Lift an Ice Cube With a String

At a temperature of 0 degrees Celsius, liquid water becomes solid ice. Being less dense than water, an ice cube floats when dropped into a glass of water. When a little salt is sprinkled on the ice cube, it lowers the freezing point of ice and melts the layer in contact with the salt. As the surrounding water takes the place of the saline water, the freezing point of water increases, and it freezes in place of the melted salt layer.
