How to Cite a Bible Scripture Word Chicago Style

Like any other quotation, you must cite quotations from scripture in your academic writing. Many disciplines in the humanities use the Chicago Manual of Style as the standard reference for formatting and other style necessities, including how to cite referenced works. Keep the Chicago Manual of Style guidelines handy while you write your scripture-inclusive essay and before long you will have them memorized.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the biblical word or passage into quotation marks.

    • 2

Include a parenthetical citation after the quotation unless you are using note references. In either case the citation will include first the book of the Bible from which you drew your word or passage. The book is usually abbreviated (for example Gn. for Genesis). After the book, write the chapter then the verse from which the passage came. Separate the chapter and verse with a colon or period (for example, Ps. 103:6-14). Never cite a page number from the Bible. The quotation followed by parenthetical citation should look something like this: "Peace be to you, fear not" (Gn. 43:23).

    • 3

Identify in your parenthetical citation or note reference the version of the Bible from which you drew your quote. Spell out the entire version title at least the first time you reference it (for example, Ps.103:6-14 Revised Standard Version). Abbreviate subsequent references to the version title (for example, Ps.103:6-14 RSV).
