Choctaw Indian Crafts

The Choctaw are a Native American people whose traditional home is in the southeast of the United States. In comparison to modern times, historical Choctaw life was composed of what are now thought of as crafts. This includes, but is not limited to, basketry, appliqué and pottery.
  1. Choctaw Baskets

    • Traditional Choctaw baskets are made from swamp canes or oak and colored with vegetable dyes. Today artificial dyes may be used instead.

One technique the Choctaw use is the double weave, for baskets made to carry vegetables or fruit, or for more decorative types of baskets used for holding lightweight materials such as magazines.

    Choctaw Appliqué Dress

    • Choctaw traditional dress changed after the introduction of Western culture. The Choctaw adapted Western clothing, incorporating appliqué designs on both men's and women's garments.

Traditional appliqué designs include hollow circles, diamonds, triangles and filled circles. Hand sewing the whole garment is the traditional way to create a piece of Choctaw clothing, though people may use prefabricated trimming.

    Pottery

    • The Choctaw are one of three tribes in Oklahoma that made pottery after European arrival. Items include bowls with brims that curved inward and cups with handles. Designs range from animals to geometric designs made with a toothed comb-like tool to create close-set, parallel lines.

    Choctaw Beadwork

    • Beadwork was is used by the Choctaw for decorating traditional clothes, such as tribal dresses and men's shirts and belts. Beads were also sewn onto Choctaw girls' dolls. Colors depend on the crafter's preference. Patterns depend on the Choctaw tribe and the preference of the crafter.

    Bow Making

    • One example of a craft in the Choctaw culture in which wood was worked was the bow. The Osage orange, also known as bois d'ark, and hickory were common bow woods, since they were dense, yet bendable, and recover their shape quickly after being bent. A traditional method of shaping the bow involves using stone tools to work the wood while it is green.
