Cub Scout Indian Crafts

Cub Scouts typically learn about traditional American Indian crafts and activities, which can teach them about other cultures and comradeship. If you are working with Cub Scouts, it can be helpful to know how to construct a few American Indian crafts so that you can enable the boys to make them as well.
  1. Grocery Bag Tepee

    • Some native tribes would construct tepees in which they would sleep. Cub Scouts can learn how these tepees are constructed by making a small model of one out of a paper grocery bag. Start by collecting four sticks that each measure around 12 inches long. Place the sticks together, loosely tying the ends together on one side using twine or string. Splay the twigs out at the bottom to form a tepee shape. Lay the tepee on its side onto a paper grocery bag, and trace around one side using a pencil. Repeat this three more times, tracing the side so that they are right next to each other, until you have four triangles. Set the twigs aside. Cut out the entire shape. Glue the paper bag shape around the twig tepee, and allow it to dry.

    Paper Tube Totem Poles

    • Native peoples along the West Coast of the United States create large totem poles, which represent different icons of animals and spirits. Your Cub Scouts can create a replica of a totem pole using paper towel tubes. Place a sheet of brown construction paper horizontally in front of you, and divide it into four equal sections horizontally. Draw an animal face onto each of the sections, using colored pencils or markers. Apply craft glue to the paper towel tube, and wrap the construction paper around it, cutting off any excess.

    Paper Bag Canoe

    • Many different native peoples constructed canoes to travel with over rivers and lakes. Your Cub Scouts can create their own native canoes out of construction paper. Start by folding a piece of brown construction paper in half horizontally. Press the crease. Fold back either side of the crease, leaving around one-half inch unfolded on either side. This will create two new folds. Press the creases. You should have a shape that resembles a "W". Keep the shape folded and place it horizontally onto a table. Use a pencil to draw a curve on either end, making the shape appear like a canoe. Use scissors to cut along the curves. Use a single-hole punch to poke three holes on both sides where you cut the curves out. Thread string or yarn through the holes and tie it off. The canoe can now be opened and played with.
