Edible Dinosaur Lessons

There are many ways to teach children about dinosaurs. Some include reading books, visiting museums, watching informative movies and listening to expert paleontologist speakers. Another way to teach children about dinosaurs is through edible lessons. Children can use their sense of taste as a sensory learning tool when experiencing these crafts. Ask parents about food allergies before performing these and any other activities that include food.
  1. Bones

    • Create yummy dinosaur "bones" for which children can dig to find in some equally yummy "dirt" to create a tasty lesson on dinosaurs. The website Nutrition Explorations gives a recipe to create tasty dinosaur bones. Combine peanut butter, dry milk and honey to create the bones. Shape the mixture into dinosaur bone shapes and sprinkle them with crushed graham crackers. Then bury the bones in a mixture of graham crackers and brown sugar and let children dig through the "dirt" to find the dinosaur bones. Another fun dinosaur bone edible lesson is to make a soft pretzel dough and allow children to form their own dinosaur bone shape out of the dough, then bake and eat it.

    Fossils

    • Paleontologists have learned a lot about dinosaurs through the discovery of fossils. The website Kaboose details a lesson on how to turn coffee grounds into fossils. Create a dough with edible products such as flour, salt and coffee to create the fossils. Once the dough has been prepared, press small dinosaur figures into the dough to cause an impression, and then lift them off. Also use small toy bones to create fossils. Allow the fossils to dry overnight or up to two days. For a tastier treat, make a simple sugar cookie recipe and then use clean, plastic dinosaurs to make impressions in the cookies. Use the whole dinosaurs or just their feet or skin texture to create a "fossil." Bake the "fossil" cookies and enjoy.

    Eggs

    • Teach children about dinosaur eggs through a fun, edible craft. The website Teacher's Desk has a recipe for edible dough that can be used to create dinosaur eggs. Combine peanut butter, honey and some powdered milk to create a dough. Have children form the dough into the shape of dinosaur eggs. Combine chow mein noodles and marshmallows and form the mixture in a muffin tin to create a dinosaur nest. Reinforce the fact that dinosaurs were hatched from eggs by putting an edible candy dinosaur (available at candy stores) inside of an Easter egg gelatin mold. Fill the egg molds with gelatin, and let them in chill in the refrigerator. Let children dig through the gelatin to find the dinosaur.

    Other

    • Children will be all smiles when they see and taste some dinosaur sweet treats. Make sugar cookies and cut them into dinosaur shapes. Read a story about dinosaurs and then let children decorate the dinosaurs with green frosting and sprinkles. You can also make a dinosaur-themed cake to go along with a dinosaur lesson unit. Incorporate a fun game into an edible dinosaur lesson. Hide a large watermelon and send kids on a scavenger hunt that results in them finding the giant "dinosaur egg."
