Create an art lesson on color using fall leaves. Show children how blending different colors makes new colors. Go outdoors and gather a bunch of fall leaves with children and examine with them how some leaves have two color tones and mixed together they create a third color. For example, green and yellow blended together can form a neon green, and red and yellow form orange. For younger children, you may use the fall leaves to introduce color. The fall leaves go from green, red, orange to yellow.
Teach children how to create drawings with dimension. Many young children learn to draw, but the drawings produced are flat, or two-dimensional. Draw pumpkins with children and show how adding curved lines and shadows help make the drawing appear three-dimensional. After practicing drawing a whole pumpkin, show them how to draw a carved pumpkin. The triangle carvings may also be drawn to appear three-dimensional.
Teach children about the art of collages, in which different forms and elements come together to form a meaningful whole art piece. Take leaves gathered from outdoors or use tissue paper in the fall colors of red, orange and yellow, and cut them into shapes of squares, triangles and circles. Draw a tree outline with branches on construction paper and have the cut-out shapes glued to the tree branches to form a tree collage.
Create paintings of the fall season with children. Go outdoors where the trees are colorful -- and the ground may be covered in leaves -- to create a painting. Holidays during the fall, such as Halloween and Thanksgiving, also offer many painting ideas. Have children make a painting of their Halloween costume. Children can also create paintings of pumpkins or a turkey.
