How to Get a Copy of a Final Exam

Final examinations are usually administered by college instructors and professors to assess a student's coursework proficiency at the completion of a semester or academic year. Some students might request a copy of a final examination to view comments added by the instructor or to include in a job portfolio, while others may have been absent on the testing day and need to make-up the exam. If you need to obtain a copy of a final exam, initiating contact with your instructor can help start the process.

Contact your instructor to request an appointment to get a copy of the test to take your final exam. You should contact your instructor as soon as possible -- generally within 24 to 48 hours -- about an absence. Instructors are usually more willing to administer exams to students who have legitimate, verifiable reasons for their absence on testing day. If you've experienced an unplanned absence for emergency reasons, such as for a medical situation or a funeral, bring proof such as a note from a physician or an obituary. For planned absences, some instructors might permit you to take the exam at a scheduled later date. Regardless of the circumstances, it's at the instructor's discretion to deny or accept your request to make up a final exam.

Ask your professor about the steps needed to obtain a copy of the final exam. To ensure test integrity, some professors administer exams in their offices, while others might utilize the services of a graduate assistant or an on-campus resource to proctor the exam. This ensures that students do not violate the school's honor code by cheating on an examination. Some universities allow professors and instructors to securely send a copy of the exam, including the test instructions, to a testing services facility for student make-up exams. Although this service might be provided for free, depending on your school's policies, you might be required to pay a fee to use the facility's proctor services. If you need to obtain a copy of your final exam for other reasons, you must follow certain guidelines.

Contact your professor at least one to three weeks in advance if you would like to obtain a copy of your final exam. Some students like to view comments or notes left by an instructor. Other students request copies of final exams if it helps to display a student's talent or skill, such as an art or dance majors final portfolio or video. Most professors are extremely busy so it's best to let the instructor know in advance if you'd like to get a copy of your final exam. Note that some professors discard final exams within days of exam completion. If you need the exam after the semester ends, check your syllabus to locate the instructor's cell or home phone number or summer email address. Some professor's provide this information as a courtesy to students.

Log in to your BlackBoard student account. Many colleges and universities use the interactive BlackBoard online database to administer exams, start class discussions or post class notes. Some instructors post final exams online and include suggestions or comments for the student to consider for the future. You can also peruse the site as some instructors even post previous exams to help students review for upcoming tests.
